Calgrit can be purchased from Elite Fish Mount Barker in SA. I just picked up 10 bags (10kg ) and it's the right stuff.

No, you shouldn't use Quartz sand.

Perfect. Thanks Craig. Wanting to try and get it today so I can wash it and put in my tank. Have ordered my calgrit so hopefully that arrives during the week. How long would you suggest to have it all up and running for with fish and plants in before adding a turtle?

Fantastic thanks. Will get some fish and shrimp breeding, add some small yabbies and let it do its work.

Don't use shrimp or yabbies, they will not survive the cycling process. Goldfish are the best fish to cycle an aquarium.

Managed to get my river sand today, I have washed it and it's now in my tank. Looks good, maybe some Goldfish tomorrow, calgrit should arrive in the next few days. It's all coming together. Thanks for all your help.

The river sand above is the one from Bunnings. It says double washed river sand.
