    Hi everyone,

I have a 2-3 month old Murray River turtle and live in the Canberra region.

It's coming into winter so there will be weeks where the temperature will be lucky to get over 10 degrees during the day.

My question is, is it actually safe to put him outside to bask when it's that cold?

Should I put some warm water in the bottom of his basking container to help him stay warm?

I would appreciate your advice please.

    Cheers,

    Brendon.

Hi @Brendon, don't take your turtle outdoors to bask unless the temp is at least 18°C. Putting your turtle in warm water outside in the cold to bask will not achieve anything other than give it a respiratory infection. Over winter it's advisable that you use a mercury vapour basking lamp for your turtle's aquarium. A mercury vapour lamp puts out quite a bit of UVB and will help make up for the lack of outside time over the cooler months. I personally prefer the Exo-Terra Solar Glo MVB lamps. They're available in 80 watt, 125 watt and 160 watt, depending on the size of your setup.
