I'm looking at building a stand for my 4x2x2 tank. I'll be able to save a little bit of money, would 4x2 timber be strong enough to hold a tank of that size or is it best to just purchase a pre-made stand?

    Hi Daniel,
You can use 35mm x 70mm structural pine for the frame and legs and then use smaller grade timber for the bracing. The main thing is to make sure the tank sits on the top of the legs. 4 legs for a 4 x 2 is fine. Bigger stands would be better with 6. I'll try to dig up an old photo. I used to make heaps of them when I bred fish.

    Hi Daniel

I am not handy and have always bought purpose specific stands of good quality. The stand needs to be able to hold a substantial weight. I am loath to have a substandard stand supporting a valuable aquarium and its guests. Jeopardising an investment to save a few dollars.

Where possible I have tried to incorporate the entire setup as a item of furniture. That aside sometimes Petlink fish and Gumtree have something worthwhile however on occasions the vendors have unrealistic expectations.

There's heaps of DIY stands on YouTube, there's an aquarium DIY bloke who does some flash looking ones.

Not sure if this will be any help you you but here's a few pics of the custom pine stand that was built to hold my custom 4×3×2 turtle aquarium. The tank itself is made from 12mm glass and has a double glazed 25mm base. Completely empty it weighs 150 kilos and full, 50 kilos of river sand + 20 kilos of calgrit and 500 litres of water, it weighs over 3/4 of a tonne.
It's a 6-legged pine stand and it holds the weight no problems at all.

No worries mate. I'm certain you'd be able to make your own stand, provided you have the necessary equipment.
